Project Details

This project was an early phase of a realignment of Lakeshore Drive to create additional real and smother flow of traffic in Toronto’s downtown core.

 Work started with the installation of a turbidity curtain and the demolition of sections of the existing concrete cope wall.

The concrete demolition was followed by the installation of approximately 60 lineal meters of steel (interconnecting pipe-to-sheet pile-to-pipe elements) combi-wall across the slip.  A “panel” approach was utilized that required the accurate drilling of rock sockets for the pipe piles, without using the conventional installation templates.  The pre-fabricated panels were then placed into the drilled sockets.  Grout was then tremied into the anulus of the rock sockets and the piles were filled with concrete.

Next was the dredging, marine transport, offloading, pretreating/dewatering and eventual disposal of approximately 8,000 cubic meters of contaminated sediments.  A plastic-lined temporary containment/pretreatment cell was constructed.  As the fill area had been isolated, the dredging was performed with modified hydraulic excavator and a clamshell bucket.  The dredge spoil was treated with a drying agent, loaded into trucks for disposal at a licensed site.

Various types of geosynthetics were installed within the newly created area to be filled.  The joints between the existing dock structures and the new combi-wall were sealed.  The offshore side of the combi-wall was backfilled with almost 10,000t of stone.  The fill area was infilled with 42,000t of Granular B.  Rock anchors were installed.  The concrete cope was poured and the rock anchors tensioned.
